UN System
The United Nations is central to global efforts to solve problems that challenge humanity. Cooperating in this effort are more than 30 affiliated organizations, known together as the UN system. Day in and day out, the UN and its family of organizations work to promote respect for human rights, protect the environment, improve global security, fight disease and reduce poverty throughout the world.
At the World Summit held in September 2005 in New York, FYR Macedonia was one of the 189 countries which once again reiterated its commitment to the Millennium Declaration and pledged to achieve the eight Millennium Development Goals. These goals, in the area of poverty, education, health, gender and environment have to be met by 2015. This means that we have only five more years left to make FYR Macedonia a better place for all. A place with less people living in poverty, more children in school, more people living healthy lives and all enjoying a protected environment.
UNDP is one of the 13 UN members of the UN Country Team (UNCT) in FYR Macedonia, which includes: UNAIDS, UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNIFEM, UNMIK, ILO, IOM, OHCHR, WHO plus the two Bretton Woods Institutions (IMF and WB), as well as UNESCO as a non-resident agency.
UNDP programming complements and fulfils, in partnership with other UN Agencies, the jointly agreed outcomes of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for 2010-2015, agreed to by both the Government and all the UN agencies with activities in the country and signed in May 2009.
UNDP’s current focus areas (Democratic Governance, Social Inclusion and Environment) directly contribute to the UN’s support of the Government in achieving its national development priorities of EU accession and the MDGs and directly realize the three joint UNDAF priority outcomes, namely:
1. Social Inclusion;
2. Local Governance and Territorial Development; and
3. Environmental Protection.
UNDP is the lead UNCT agency of the Local Governance and Territorial Development and Environmental Protection Outcomes, chairing the inter-agency Outcome Working Groups for these areas.
In addition to these overall priority areas of the UNCT, capacity development to bring about effective and transparent governance, improved aid coordination, human rights, gender equality, and creating a culture of interethnic cohesion are important cross-cutting themes to be integrated in all UNDAF programmatic activities. Additionally, UNDP programming seeks to promote and advance the use of Results Based Management best practices in support of building administrative and institutional capacity.
In the context of UN reform, UNDP actively participates in UN joint programming, supporting and contributing to the RC’s Annual Report to the UN Secretary General, UNCT Meetings and Retreats, UNDAF Annual Reviews and Evaluations.
UNDP is also actively involved in the UN’s Theme Group and Working Group mechanisms: HIV/AIDS, Human Rights and Gender, Operations Management Team (OMT) and the UN Communications Group (UNCG), chairing both the OMT and UNCG.
The UN System in FYR Macedonia intends to keep the promise and we are counting on all of you to do the same.
